Algerian Sweet-Making class

Where history is baked with honey and almonds

Discover the sweet heart of Algeria with our exclusive Traditional Algerian Sweet Class. This hands-on workshop is not just about baking; it's an immersion into a rich cultural heritage, a chance to learn skills passed down through generations, and an opportunity to create lasting memories.
The Concept
In Algerian culture, traditional sweets are more than just desserts; they are an essential part of every major celebration, from weddings and religious festivals like Eid to the welcoming of a newborn. They symbolize joy, abundance, and hospitality. Our class brings this cherished tradition to life, allowing visitors to engage with local customs in a warm, welcoming environment. Guided by a local expert host, participants use essential Algerian ingredients like almonds, dates, honey, and fragrant orange blossom water to craft these intricate and delicious treats.
What to Expect
The experience is designed to be interactive, educational, and deeply personal:
  • Market Visit: The journey often begins with a visit to a local market (souk) to select fresh, quality ingredients, giving insight into daily Algerian life and local produce.
  • Hands-On Learning: In a traditional setting, you will learn to prepare iconic sweets such as:
    • **Makrout: ** Delicious date-filled pastries, often deep-fried and soaked in honey.
    • ** Mkhabez: ** Elegant, almond-based cakes meticulously decorated with royal icing, a true art form in itself.
    • ** Ghraïba: ** Simple yet delightful shortbread cookies made with flour, butter, and sugar, a staple for everyday treats.
  • Cultural Exchange: Throughout the class, your host will share the stories and significance behind each sweet, from the symbolic use of specific ingredients to the rituals surrounding their serving.
  • Tasting Session: The best part? Enjoying the fruits of your labor! The class concludes with a relaxing tasting session, where you'll savor your creations with a glass of traditional strong, sweet mint tea or Turkish-style coffee.
  • Recipes to Take Home: You'll leave with recipes and the skills to recreate these delights for your friends and family, a truly authentic souvenir of your Algerian adventure.
